A conspiracy theorist YouTube personality goes missing during the pandemic, and two friends try to find him without leaving their homes.
Wes Crowley’s life isn’t going so great. He’s in the middle of a nasty divorce while in quarantine when he learns that a childhood friend, Toby Blackwood, has gone missing. To avoid his own problems, Wes decides to track down Toby with the help of another friend. To complicate things, Toby is a popular YouTube conspiracy theorist with some very passionate fans. In order to find him, Wes has to make sense of what little clues are left behind in a world where almost nothing makes sense.
The Lowdown
“The Disappearance of Toby Blackwood” began production promptly at the beginning of the pandemic shutdown with an extremely limited crew and budget. To shoot safely, the script had to be structured in a creative way so that characters were not in the same room. The on-set crew rarely involved more than three people, and the film only features two scenes in which the actors were physically together… but you would probably never notice.
The Cast
While the nature of the project limited actors to be filmed in isolation, this also opened up possibilities for the cast to be filmed all over America and even in the UK. Many scenes consist of footage compiled from multiple cities.
The Movie
“The Disappearance of Toby Blackwood” was awarded the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Prize at the Gasparilla Int’l Film Festival, The Audience Choice Award at Richmond International Film Festival, and the Audience Choice Award at Bare Bones Film Festival. It is also an Official Selection of the Phoenix Film Festival, Maui Film Festival, Portland Film Festival, and the Los Angeles Comedy Film Festival.
